Equality and Diversity

The University of Glasgow's Equality Statement:

The University of Glasgow is committed to promoting equality in all its activities and aims to provide a work, learning, research and teaching environment free from discrimination and unfair treatment.

This section provides links to a number of resources relating to the different diversity strands - disability, race equality, sexual orientation - and how these relate to learning, teaching and assessment.

Information about University of Glasgow policies and action plans can be found through the Equality and Diversity Unit. They also provide information about the UK Single Equality Act, as information is released.


 
Good practice guidelines and resources

Disability

Guide for Academic Staff Supporting Disabled Students (November 2008, Revised February 2011)

This short guide, provided through the Disability Service web pages, addresses disabled students’ study arrangements. It provides points of good practice and legal compliance for staff involved in course preparation, teaching and assessment.  Two key issues relate to the requirements a) for course organisers to know which students require adjustments (see paragraph 4.3) and b) for academic staff to provide preparatory material for lectures (see paragraph 5.5).  This document has been revised (February 2011), updates will be managed through this link to the Disability Service web pages.

Making Your Teaching Inclusive

This Open University based website helps academic staff understand the needs of disabled students and respond effectively to them within teaching, learning and assessment practice.

Just Ask: Integrating Technology Through Design

A book by Shawn Lawton that helps web developers design accessibility into websites and other resources.

Teachability

Freely available informative publications for academic staff on how to design accessible curricula for disabled students.

Learning Support for Disabled Students Undertaking Fieldwork and Related Activities

TechDis

TechDis is a JISC funded service which aims to enhance provision for disabled students and staff through the use of technology.  They have produced some useful Accessibility Essentials Guides to help staff develop more inclusive curricula.  Information about these is available online at: http://www.jisctechdis.ac.uk/techdis/keyinitiatives/organisationaleffectiveness/enablingtechnology/accessibility_essentials.  They include guides for making electronic documents more accessible, as well as making presentations and pdfs more accessible.

Supervision of Research Students with Dyslexia Toward a Code of Good Practice  (pdf)

The report of a research project in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Glasgow, investigating the issues for a dyslexic student undertaking postgraduate research. 

Beattie Resources for Inclusiveness in Technology and Education (BRITE)

The initiative provides information, advice and training on inclusive education, assessment and enabling technologies. The reources section includes an online guide for dyslexia as well as an online guide for supporting deaf students.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Perspectives and Learning at University (PDF file)

This is an academic development discussion briefing paper. This briefing is designed to raise awareness of the needs of LGBT students in higher education institutions (HEIs) in the UK. To achieve this it:

  • explores, from a student learning perspective, why academics need ‘to bother’ with the issue of LGBT experience of university study
  • suggests readings and resources for use as part of academic development strategies designed to enhance learning and teaching
  • summarises key themes in recent research on LGBT students’ experience of being at university
  • provides an up-to-date reference list for further study.
