Common Student Computing Environment (CSCE)

Last reviewed: 24/05/11

Description

The CSCE offers a consistent core set of applications and settings but allows Colleges the flexibility to augment the standard with more specialised applications to meet their needs. The latest versions of the CSCE offer further flexibilty to students by storing personal settings on the student's filestore.

The CSCE is a complete PC software solution for centrally provided clusters and departmental clusters that provides standard computing facilities for students eg:Email, web browsing, document preparation, etc.
It is a base onto which Colleges or School specific software can be added and can be fully customised through a variety of mechanisms.

Why adopt Common Student Computing Environment?

  • Centrally funded - no additional charge to College for the standard service
  • A core University service - high priority maintenance and support
  • Avoids the time, effort and cost of developing, maintaining and supporting local equivalents, freeing College IT staff for College-specific activities
  • Single service across campus provides economies of scale and infrastructure
  • Antivirus and patching updates provided centrally
  • Future improvements and facilities will be seamlessly integrated
  • On site technical expertise
  • Filestore securely backed up

Features

  • Configurable- incorporates College/School/Institute specific software requirements
  • Student access the same core environment and applications across campus
  • Authentication to a common campus directory service (Active Directory)
  • Same access control for other IT Services eg VPN, Moodle, WebSurf, etc
  • User data stored on a fileserver - workstation stores only software and is thus expendable
  • Centrally managed updating and security patching over the network
  • Can be installed (and reinstalled) quickly and easily
  • Remote access via Microsoft Remote Desktop service
