The Domain Name Service (DNS) is a 24/7 network service which provides clients with access to the Internet distributed name database.

Further Information

All new and existing systems on campus should be registered in the DNS with machine and network address. Failure to register systems may result in some network services being denied. To register a system in the DNS please contact your Local IT staff with details of your system and IP address (if known).

DNS is a transparent service which provides a mapping between hostnames and Internet addresses.
Access to DNS is normally achieved through a DNS resolver on the client system (PC etc) and is usually set up when the system is initially configured.
At Glasgow there are three DNS servers available for general use. These servers should be specified in the order of preference given below.
