Student IT satisfaction survey Results

Thank you for the feedback! and congratulations to the winners of free print credits.
PC AVAILABILITY
There is still pressure on PC availability at certain times. Main reasons mentioned include selfish users, “booking” by leaving clothing or other devious means, use for social or personal purposes when people need to study, and PCS out of order. Please do politely let people know if you think they are behaving unreasonably; our staff cannot be everywhere.
Everyone should be aware that, regrettably, thefts occur all too frequently, so it’s not only selfish but very risky to leave property at a PC. Library attendants and IT Staff are not permitted to take property away, but it’s quite reasonable to move it a short distance across a table, say, to get access to a PC. If you encounter any hostility from someone who had "booked" a PC, please refer them to the Helpdesk staff.
Our staff work hard to keep all PCs operational but you can help by reporting any problems to the Helpdesk. Please DON’T make up your own signs, as they cannot be assumed to be genuine. Please DO NOT touch machines which have "Out of Order" signs on them - dozens of repairs are interrupted every week by students unplugging machines which are being repaired, and this just makes it harder to keep as many working as possible.
Please note that the provision of desks for laptops is a Library facility; if you believe there should be more of these facilities available, the Library would be happy to hear from you via comment cards or other channels.
PRINTING
We responded to comments in the October survey by providing more printers, and it is good to see fewer such comments in November. When a printer doesn’t work, never try to fix the problem yourself; all mechanisms are different and delicate, and you are very likely to make the problem worse or injure yourself. Report it to the IT Helpdesk using an internal phone (ext 6921) and someone will attend to it.
Some people have asked for a printer in the Reading Room; unfortunately in the past the Reading Room printer was damaged on several occasions by student attempts to “fix” it. Eventually the printer was damaged beyond repair, so it was withdrawn from service and there are currently no plans to replace it.
DEPARTMENT IT
A number of comments were made about IT facilities in the student’s own school or college. The question is included in order to distinguish these from central facilities, and where an issue is raised we (central IT Services) will feed it back if the school or college is identified. A better approach however is for you to contact your College IT support team directly.
