How to obtain header information

Email messages contain header information which is useful when determining the origin of a message. Details of the route the message has taken during delivery are also available. Most of the header information is hidden by default. However, it can easily be revealed. Precise instructions depend on which mail software you use - please follow the appropriate procedure below.

Note - the most important headers are those labeled "Received". Please make sure you can see "Received" headers - if they are not visible then the full header information is still hidden.

  • Webmail
  • Exchange 2007 (student and staff who use CAMPUS)
  • IMP ( central UNIX )
  • NIMS ( clinmed )
    Outlook
  • Outlook 2003

    1. Open the message (double click)
    2. Under the View menu select Options
    3. Copy the text in the Internet Headers window (unfortunately it doesn't include the message itself).
    4. Paste the Headers into a new e-mail along with the body text itself

    Outlook 2007

    1. Open the message (double click)
    2. On the Message tab in the Options group, click the Dialog Box Laucher  symbol of a square with the arrow pointing to bottom right)
    3. Copy the text in the Internet Headers window (unfortunately it doesn't include the message itself).
    4. Paste the Headers into a new e-mail along with the body text itself

    Outlook 2010

    1. Open the message (double click)
    2. Select the File tab
    3. Select Proprties buttomn
    4. Copy the text in the Internet Headers window (unfortunately it doesn't include the message itself).
    5. Paste the Headers into a new e-mail along with the body text itself

    Exchange 2007

    1. Open the message
    2. Click the message details icon
    3. Copy the text in the Internet Headers window (unfortunately it doesn't include the message itself).
    4. Paste the Headers into a new e-mail along with the body text itself


    IMP

    1. Open the message (click)
    2. Click "Message Source"
    3. Highlight, copy and paste everything into a new e-mail.

    MedMail

    1. Open the message (click)
    2. Click the grey Source button above the message itself
    3. Highlight, copy and paste everything into a new e-mail.
