National e-Science Centre

The National e-Science Centre is partly based in Glasgow and provides help and assistance to researchers on campus (regardless of discipline). More information can be found at http://www.gla.ac.uk/escience

High Perfomance Compute Clusters

Computing Service
There is a cluster of dual Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) machines  that is configured for batch processing of jobs. The Cluster runs Torque/Maui. More details can be found at http://www.gla.ac.uk/it/forresearchers/computecluster/

School of Physics and Astronomy

Video Conferencing

There are 2 Access Grid nodes on campus that are available to book. In addition there are other video conferencing facilities available. See the Multimedia Communications Unit (MCU) for further details.

DNS Registration and Web hosting

IT services can provide DNS & Web hosting services for research projects, eg to advertise a conference or workshop. We can register and manage your domain and provide basic web hosting and domain specific email addresses if required. If you have more intensive hosting requirements other options may be available. Contact the helpdesk for more information.

Server and User Certificates

We can  issue globally accepted certificates for Servers http://www.gla.ac.uk/it/forresearchers/servercertificates/ and we have two RA's for the UK Certification Authority, who provide user level certificates for researchers.

UK Light

The University is connected to the Janet UK Light Network which provides dedicated end to end connectivity for research projects across the UK. Access and Authentication

The university is part of the Janet Roaming Service (Eduroam) which allows participants to access services at any other part of Eduroam. More details are available here http://www.gla.ac.uk/it/Eduroam/

In addition we have flexible network access which provides for access from home and via the wireless network on campus - http://www.gla.ac.uk/it/forstaff/flexiblenetworkaccess/

We are part of the UK Access Management Federation, which provides a mechanism to control access to web resources around UK academia and beyond - http://www.gla.ac.uk/fam/

Email Addresses

Research postgraduates should have an email alias of the form j.smith.4@research.gla.ac.uk which delivers to their normal student email account. This can be used as a more 'friendly' address when communicating with outside bodies as part of your research.

A number of software packages are available for download and you can purchase selected software direct from IT services. See our software microsite for more details.
