How to configure an iPhone/iPod/iPad to use VPN

While it is possible to use your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad on the University of Glasgow network, doing so is not supported, and we may not be able to help if there are problems.

In order to use the network your iPod/iPhone/iPad must have iPhone 2.0 software or later installed.

  • There are several different wireless networks on campus, so make sure you choose the "Flexaccess" wireless network.
  • Access to our network is secured by VPN (Virtual Private Network), so you need to configure the devices VPN client and change the http proxy settings to access the internet.

Configuring the VPN

Go to - Settings> General > Network > VPN and then choose Add VPN Configuration:

Use the following settings:

  • Protocol: IPSec
  • Description: GUVPN
  • Server: gucsvpn1.cent.gla.ac.uk
  • Group name: vpnstaff
  • Secret: mon13day

Account and Password are your GUID credentials.

  • For students: this is your normal username and password as used in Moodle/webmail etc.
  • For staff: you can register online if you have not done so already - http://www.gla.ac.uk/it/forstaff/guid

Once you've created a VPN configuration, the VPN switch at the top of the VPN Configurations list can be used to turn VPN on or off.
