Configure Android for Eduroam/JRS

AndroidVersion: 1.6 and above

  1. From the home screen, tap the arrow to open the All Programs menu
  2. Tap Settings from the programs menu
  3. Tap Wireless Controls
  4. Tap Wi-Fi Settings
  5. Tap Wi-Fi to enable Wi-Fi support - the list of networks will become populated
  6. Tap the eduroam entry in the list
  7. Tap to change the EAP type to PEAP
  8. Tap to set the Sub-type to PEAPv0/MSCHAPv2 (this ought to be the default)
  9. Enter Eduroam username -
    Staff: username: yourGUID@jrs.glasgow.ac.uk (eg abc9z@jrs.glasgow.ac.uk)
    Students username: yourGUID@student.glasgow.ac.uk (eg 1234567Z@student.glasgow.ac.uk)
    Please note that this user name is NOT an email address.
  10. Enter Password: your GUID password
  11. Tap the Connect button
  12. Wait a little while (up to about a minute) until the message "Connected to eduroam" appears
  13. A connection to eduroam will automatically be made in future if Wi-Fi is switched on and you are within range.
Connecting to the internet

You will need to use a 3rd party browser that supports proxy configuration eg Safari or Opera for Android.

The proxy setting is: http://wwwcache.gla.ac.uk/dialin.pac or wwwcache.gla.ac.uk:8080

Opera proxy config instructions

type opera:config in the web address dialogue box to enter the Preferences Editor
select Proxy
enter for both HTTP server and HTTPS server:
wwwcache.gla.ac.uk:8080
select Use HTTP and Use HTTPS select Save

Tip: Use Opera Mobile while on campus, and the default web browser everywhere else.
note that some web services, e.g. marketplace, inaccessible from on campus.

Please note: changing your GUID password will change it for your mobile device settings too. You will need to enter the new password on your device.
