John Barry (fl. 1778), bookseller, Glasgow:  pasted onto new front pastedown a slip of paper (preserved from former front pastedown or flyleaf) with the annotation “Bibliothecae Universitatis Glasguensis Hunc Librum Donavit Ioannes Barry Bibliopola Dec.ris 15. 1778.”

Binding: Germany(?), 16th-century blind-tooled calf (heavily worn and damaged) over wooden boards;  each cover has a central panel formed by fillets, within which a repeated vine-like tool with tendrils (Rautengerank) forms characteristic pointed oval shapes, each filled with a separate fringed foliage tool (the latter also stamped outside the frame of the panel);  no surviving evidence of clasps;  boards repaired and recovered with brown goatskin, remains of original calf covers feathered on;  note by binder (Fiona Anderson, June 1981) mounted on rear pastedown.  Size:  323 x 216 mm.
Leaf size: 313 x 195 mm.
Annotations: Frequent marginal annotations in a 16th-century hand, together with some underlining.
Decoration: Principal initials supplied in red and blue with reserved white;  other initials and paragraph marks supplied in red or blue throughout.
Imperfections: Wanting the final blank leaf;  lower half of a2 missing (leaf repaired).
