Networking

Networking is simply getting to know people and building relationships for the purpose of sharing and increasing knowledge and uncovering new opportunities. As a researcher it is often easy to suddenly become isolated but networking allows you to share your experiences and ideas with others and results in increased confidence and self-esteem.

To get a job in today's economy, it is important to have a strong network.  Networking gives you access to unpublished information and people can give personal insight that websites, careers publications and recruitment material cannot give.

Networking is also an essential, if not central, aspect of academic life. It can help you:

  • avoid isolation
  • develop your confidence and self-esteem
  • find a job
  • raise your profile as an academic

The Graduate Junction - Building the global research community

The Graduate Junction was set up with the aim of creating a global graduate research community.  You can create your own online research profile and link to groups with the same research interests.

Joining your professional body or a similar organisation is also a great way to make contacts.
