Data Protection Act

Members of staff are responsible for ensuring that any holdings of personal data are registered internally with the University's Data Protection Officer, and for the control of students using such data under supervision. The Secretary of Court shall have the power to withdraw access to computing facilities from any person deemed to be in breach of the requirements of the Act, and to require the modification or deletion of personal data in order to ensure compliance with the Act. It is the user's responsibility to comply with these guidelines; in particular the Senate regulations concerning the disclosure of examination marks must be observed. Users must treat as privileged any information not provided or generated by themselves which may become available to them through their use of computing facilities; no part of such information may be copied, modified, disseminated or used without the permission of the appropriate person or body. Copies of guidelines on the Act are available from the Data Protection Officer. Contact should be made via the Court Office Reception Desk in the first instance (ext. 6441).

  • Personal data shall be accurate and where necessary, kept up to date.
  • Personal data held for any purpose shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or purposes.
  • An individual shall be entitled to be informed by any data user whether he holds personal data of which that individual is the subject, and shall be entitled to access to any such data held by a data user at reasonable intervals, without undue delay or expense. Where appropriate, an individual shall be entitled to have such data erased or corrected.

Appropriate security measures shall be taken against unauthorised access to, or alteration, disclosure or destruction of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of personal data.
