PGR Supervision Benchmark Information
In order to contextualise the performance of the University’s professorial staff, an analysis of the amount of research grants & contracts income and the number of PGR students per academic (Research & Teaching contract) FTE across the Russell Group has been undertaken.
This analysis uses HESA data for academic year 2009/10. HESA requires Institutions to provide the data by standard ‘cost centres’ and ‘subject areas’ and each institution maps their departments, schools, courses etc to these standard Units. This allows for the analysis to be undertaken at below the Institution level to take some account of differences between disciplines.
Table 1: PGR numbers supervised per Academic Staff member:
The table below provides the overall number of PGR students per Academic (R&T) FTE within the University of Glasgow and compares this to the Russell Group average and upper quartile. Obviously, there are discipline specific differences in the capacity of academics to supervise students, so these figures have been calculated using a mapping of HESA ‘cost centres’ and ‘subject areas’ to the University’s Schools/RI's.
