Grants and Contracts Benchmark Information
In order to contextualise the performance of the University’s professorial staff, an analysis of the amount of research grants and contracts income and the number of PGR students per academic (Research & Teaching contract) FTE across the Russell Group has been undertaken.
This analysis uses HESA data for academic year 2009/10. HESA requires Institutions to provide the data by standard ‘cost centres’ and ‘subject areas’ and each institution maps their departments, schools, courses etc to these standard Units. This allows for the analysis to be undertaken at below the Institution level to take some account of differences between disciplines.
Table 1: Grants & Contracts income per Academic Staff member.
The table below provides the amount of research grants and contracts income per academic staff member within the University and compares this to the Russell Group average and upper quartile. The analysis has been done at the level of HESA cost centre to allow for some discipline specific differences.

Table 2: Mapping of Cost Centres to existing Departments / Divisions / Research Themes.
The University maps its departments / schools to HESA cost centres as follows.
