Hetherington Research Club

It was with great sadness that that the HRC closed the doors on its facility at 13 University Gardens on 19th February 2010.

An interim club committee was appointed, and tried to reopen the club during the spring and summer of 2010, with results described on the reboot page.  This attempt was not successful – the university was not interested in reopening the club, despite two alternative business plans presented by the committee.

On 1 February 2011, the building was occupied by students, who instituted it as the 'Free Hetherington' (blogtwitterfacebook).  The occupation was evicted on 22 March, but negotiated renewed occupation of the building later that evening (see BBC, STV, Herald).

The members of the interim committee still stand by their last proposal to open the club. That proposal would require adjustment in the light of recent events (in particular, its discussion of PG representation is now probably otiose), but its general aims, and its overall motivation, are as relevant and as important now as they were last year.

Consultation meeting, 15 April 2010

The HRC Committee held a consultation meeting on 15 April, to update the membership about the committee's current plans, and to consult on the set of goals and responsibilities which are to be included in the business plan.

Initial announcement, February 2010

Although this was a shock to the majority of the membership, a group of dedicated individuals immediately formed, with the intention of re-establishing the Club on a firm financial footing. To this end, an EGM was called on the 10th March 2010. At this meeting a new Committee of Management was elected and charged with the responsibility of drawing up a feasible business plan to present to the University to prove both that the Club can be run in a financial responsible and sustainable way, and also that the HRC can become a central player in the provision of support and services to its unique membership.

This Committee cannot achieve this alone however, and we need your help. The HRC is blessed with a hugely committed and passionate membership and one which has a vast range of skills and experience useful in an endeavour such as this. If you wish to help, join the HRC’s Google Group at  http://groups.google.co.uk/group/hetheringtonclub-general  and join the debates and planning taking place there. Your support is vital to our success.

If you have any questions about the plans to renew the Hetherington or any help you might offer out with the bounds of the forums, then please contact  president@researchclub.gla.ac.uk  and your questions shall be dealt with as promptly as is possible.

Thank you sinscerly for your continued support and patience in this matter, by working together, we have a very real chance of success.
