'A' Day Changes

Certain changes came into force on 6th April 2006 for Pension Scheme members. The main changes that relate to University employees are summarised below.

  • Removal of 40 year ceiling - prior to 'A' Day the maximum number of years' service that could be accrued in a pension scheme such as USS or NASPS was 40 years. There is now no ceiling on service and members who have stopped contributions because of this rule can now re-commence contributions to either USS or NASPS and the University will continue to wholly fund the employers share of contributions.

If you wish to re-commence contributions please put your request in writing to the Pensions Section, Finance Office, Gilbert Scott Building, University Avenue, Glasgow, G12 8QQ.

  • Prudential AVC's - prior to 'A' Day the total maximum amount you could pay into a pension scheme such as USS or NASPS was 15% of your salary. Now you are able to increase these contributions to any value up to the limit of your whole salary (less your normal contribution).

If you wish to take advantage of this facility you should contact your prudential advisor direct.

  • Added Years AVC's (USS only) - USS have decided to increase the amount that can be invested in buying added years. Where previously the maximum amount that could be contributed was 8.65% of pensionable pay, USS will now allow contributions up to a maximum of 15% of pensionable pay.

For members wishing to take advantage of this facility USS have updated their modellers to enable you to see the benefits this will provide. The modellers can be accessed from the USS website.

Fee Payment Authority Form

The Fee Payment Authority Form has been altered to include a check box asking whether the work performed is chargeable to a third party. In instances where this is the case departments should place a 'Y' in the box and forward the form to Research and Other Services Section (ROSS) of the Finance Office for approval. ROSS will then forward the form to the Pay & Pensions Section for payment.

Failure to complete the box with either a 'Y' or an 'N' will result in the form being returned as 'Incomplete'.

Give As You Earn (Payroll Giving)

Give As You Earn is the most tax-efficient way for individuals to give regularly to charity. Your charitable donation is deducted from your gross salary prior to the calculation of Income Tax, therefore for a basic rate tax payer, every £1 donated actually costs only 78p. For higher rate tax payers, every £1 donated to charity represents only 60p of net pay.

A Give as you earn can be downloaded from this website.

For information on giving to the University please see the
Development and Alumni Office.

Credit Union

Members of Glasgow West Credit Union can now have their payments deducted directly from their salary and automatically paid into their credit union account. Contact Glasgow West Credit Union at 434 Dumbarton Road, Tel: 0141 339 7070 for further details.

Credit Union's are not-for-profit organisations that encourage members to save on a regular basis. They also offer low cost loans with the amount available dependent on the amount of savings held. Members of a Credit Union must have a 'common bond' - in the case of West Glasgow Credit Union the bond is that all members either live or work in West Glasgow.

All University employees are eligible to join this Credit Union, however, this is not a Glasgow University Credit Union and the University of Glasgow does not accept any legal responsibility for funds deposited within the Credit Union or any other financial transactions associated with the Credit Union.
