Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety (CP04/812)

The Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety is a new-build agricultural shed extension to an existing two storey brick building in the Garscube Estate. The new building provides 1054m2 of flexible accommodation for holding production animals and for practical teaching. The adjoining brick building was refurbished to create 583m2 of seminar and laboratory space, pharmacy facilities, offices changing areas and stockpersons accommodation. The buildings are linked by an internal corridor with a bio-zone for boot and hand washing.
The new development is located close to existing teaching facilities and was built on a steeply sloping site necessitating deep excavations and a retaining wall to level the site for the single storey wide span agricultural shed. Internally, the shed if fitted out with a demonstration area, a pig pen, a feed and bedding store and flexible penning for ease of animal movement.
Internal walls are finished with waterproof render to allow wash down to aid the spread of infection. Externally the building is clad in vented steel panels and has a composite panel roof incorporating roof lights which provide a naturally lit and ventilated environment for animals.
The project was managed on behalf of the University by John Gillies, Estates Development Officer.
