Kelvin Building (Level 2) Teaching Laboratory/Lecture Theatre Refurbishment CP04/810
This refurbishment comprised an area within Level 2 of the 'B' listed Basle Spence extention to the Kelvin Building. Funding was provided from the Scottish Research Infrastructure Fund.
The requirement for this project was to create a facility that would retain, engage and encourage 1st year students to enrol within the Faculty. There was also a requirement to provide flexible teaching and social space.
The design merged traditional listed accommodation with a contemporary take on teaching provision and design. Bright and airy teaching spaces are located off a reconfigured circulation core. Areas are separated by foldable partitions allowing flexibility and repurposing of the space to engage teaching/social interation. Increased levels of daylight are now evident due to the added expanse of glazing. Audio Visual installation is provided with integrated control of lighting, screens and projection within each teaching space.
Existing building services have been upgraded where possible providing enhanced levels of comfort and control along with increasing energy efficiency and sustainability.
The project was initially designed in house by Estates and Buildings and project managed by same to create a high quality teaching facility, encompassing five teaching spaces and the sympathetic refurbishment of the existing Lecture Theatre. The project provides a versatile teaching environment which can support a wide strategic teaching programme as well as other academic conferences and public events. All of which has been met with positive feedback from staff, students and visitors.
