Sustainable Development

This Sustainable Development website links to the policies and initiatives in the University of Glasgow that are part of our commitment to a sustainable future as defined by The Brundtland report as ' development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.'

In 1990 the Tailloire Declaration stated that Universities have a major role in the education, research, policy formation, and information exchange necessary to halt the unprecedented scale and speed of environmental pollution and degradation, and the depletion of natural resources.

The Principal has signed the Tailloire declaration on behalf of the University to affirm support for critical action on sustainable development both within the academic environment and also in the wider community. He recognises the importance of the teaching and management of these issues and of the research in this area that is already taking place across the University. In this way Glasgow joins other leading Universities around the world in addressing the environmental, social and economic factors that will help to create a sustainable future for the planet.
