Bicycle User Group at University of Glasgow (BUG)

Remit of BUG

1.  The Bicycle User Group at University of Glasgow is a group consisting of University employees and students who regularly cycle from and to their place of work and study.

2.  The aims of the group are:

  • To create an environment that is encouraging to those who wish to cycle. This means an improvement of cycle facilities (bicycle parking, shower/changing facilities) and in cycle conditions (routes, access, lighting and ground surface).
  • To improve cycle security and safety for cyclists and pedestrians;
  • To represent the interest of campus cyclists in the relevant forums;
  • To support the organisation of University events which raise the profile of cycling or provide a service for cyclists. This could be bicycle training and maintenance workshop, social rides, slide shows, etc.;
  • To share information and advice on routes, products, tricks and tips;
  • To improve attitudes towards cycling and encourage more staff and students to commute by bicycle, including the support of new cyclists.

3.  With these aims the group supports and complements the objectives of the University’s Sustainability Policy and the Travel Plan. The achievement of these aims will create conditions which encourage other staff members and students to use their bicycles for commuting. This will lead to a further improvement in the quality of life, health and access to the university premises.

4.  Activities/Initiatives to achieve the group’s aims may include:

  • Campus audit to identify scope and locations of potential improvements for bicycle parking, shower/changing facilities, routes, access, lighting and ground surface;
  • Co-operation with Central Services and Strathclyde Police to increase bicycle security on the campus;
  • Establish a forum for the exchange of information and advice;
  • To contribute to cycle training and bicycle maintenance workshops;
  • To contribute to a Bike Buddy scheme;
  • To contribute to the organisation of cycling related events such as social rides, slide shows, etc;
  • To contribute to publications giving information about cycling on the campus;
  • Preparation of recommendations for action to the Amenity committee in relation to all above.

5.  The group will work closely together with the Travel and Transport Co-ordinator and the Estates and Buildings Office. It will prepare recommendations for actions to the Amenity Committee. Co-operation within the University may extend also to other departments (i.e. Central Services). Initiatives, aimed for the improvement of cycling conditions outwith the campus may involve co-operation with Glasgow City Council’s Land Services Cycle Unit or other local authorities as well as cycling groups and organisations (GoBike, Cycling Scotland etc).

6.  Membership of the group is informal and open to any staff member and student at the University, especially those who cycle and those who agree with the objectives of the group. Meetings will be held at an appropriate time before Amenity Committee Meetings or, in relation to planned actions, if the need arises.
