Preference Services
The Data Protection Act 1998 and the Privacy in Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 places restrictions on unsolicited telephone and fax marketing, and introduces new restrictions on marketing by e-mail and text messaging (SMS).
Preference Services enable an individual to register their wish to opt out of receiving unsolicited messages by e-mail, mail, telephone or fax. Organisations are obliged either by law or by Codes of Practice to ensure that individual wishes are adhered to. The Direct Marketing Association provide a range of Preference Services.
If you have a complaint regarding the content and/or promotion of a service running on a premium rate number then you can contact ICSTIS - the Independant Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services.
