What are the payment arrangements for scribes and who organises scribes for exams?

Please see our website on exam arrangements

A student in my tutorial tells me he is dyslexic - how do I mark his work?

The University has a policy of anonymous marking (see Calendar Regulations) . However if a student's written coursework is of an unacceptable standard and you know that the student is dyslexic, please refer them back to their Disability Adviser who can arrange proof-reading or one-to-one study support, as required.

A student has broken his wrist and can’t write his exams - does he need to go to the Disability Service?

No.  The remit of the Disability Service does not extend to students with temporary disabilities.  Providing the student with extra time and a scribe or a computer may be appropriate.  Your department should seek approval from the Clerk of Senate before making necessary arrangements (see Calendar Regulations).  The student can apply to the Registry Crisis Fund if financial assistance is required for taxis etc.

I have a student coming on a course who uses a wheelchair and our teaching room is not accessible - what do I do?

Book an alternative venue on campus which is accessible and ask the student to make an appointment with a Disability Adviser before the course starts so that a full ‘needs assessment’ can take place.

A student tells me she needs information in an accessible format - how do I do this?

If the information you provide is in electronic format, then sending a CD Rom, weblink, or email with word attachments should make the information accessible for most students.  Electronic format will mean that a student who uses screen reader software can access textual information or can enlarge to a font size and type to suit their own accessibility requirements.  For more specific information on Braille, audio or coloured paper requirements get in contact with our office 0141 330 5497.

How do I find out how to book a sign language interpreter for a Deaf person?

You should contact the Disability Service and speak to Julie.Summers@glasgow.ac.uk who works with Deaf students.   tel 0141 330 2270.  She can provide you with contact details for interpreters known to the University & interpreting agencies.  Please refer any new or prospective Deaf or hard of hearing student to Julie so that the appropriate arrangements for his/her course are put in place

What about student confidentiality?

Information about a student’s disability related support needs will only be passedon to the relevant academic department(s) with the student’s written consent. Students are required to sign a Data Protection Disclaimer to enable the service to pass on this information on a ‘need to know’ basis only, while still retaining their right to have this information treated confidentially.

I’ve just been newly appointed to the role of DDC - what information do I need to know?

Please inform Sylvia.Morgan@glasgow.ac.uk Office Manager of the Disability Service.  The Disability Advisers will also be happy to meet with you to answer any questions.

How to Join the Disability Contacts MOODLE

The Moodle site was one of the requests that came out of last year's DDC briefing session and also from the focus group arranged by EDU for the DES. The idea is for the Disability Contacts to have ownership and say what they wish so the staff of the Disability Service are not enrolled on this site.

https://services.moodle.gla.ac.uk/login/index.php

Moodle Name: Disability Service

Enrolment key: ‘Disability Service’

After you have enrolled you should be able to use your usual GUID/MIS user name and password.
