Cooking for charity

Linda Martin has produced a cook book to raise fund for the POG after her son was successfully treated for Leukamia

Linda said - 'The care and support that John received in Gartnavel from the medical team and the ward staff was exceptional. We decided as a family to try and raise funds for leukaemia research. We had a race night. My daughter Laura and I ran a race for life and as a family including John and 3 of my sisters, we did "cycle Glasgow" in 2008.  All the time I was thinking about producing a recipe book, based on my experiences in the classroom, to sell and raise funds. When we were told in February that John was cured - his treatment finished in June 2009, I did just that and Laura did all the illustrations.'

Not just a recipe book, there are lots of ideas for "assembling" dishes using good quality prepared foods and tips on how to eat well and get the best results from your efforts.  It is on sale for £10 and all proceeds will go to Paul O'Gorman  Leukaemia  Research  Centre. To order a copy email  linda@stanely.plus.com

Small Animal Hospital official opening

John Swinney MSP, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, officially opened the University of Glasgow's £15m Small Animal Hospital on Tuesday 6 July. Also at the opening were Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli and Professor Stuart Reid, Head of the Vet School.

Mr Swinney praised the Hospital as a world class facility and added, 'its' a great compliment to the University that it’s brought together the necessary funding support to ensure that we’ve got such an excellent care facility and such an excellent research facility.'

'It complements the reputation for veterinary medicine expertise that Glasgow University commands and it helps to contribute towards developing the economic impact of the University within Scotland and also the research gathering potential of the University, which is very significant, within Scotland.'

Cycling the Alps

Earlier this year Beatson Pebble Appeal supporters Susan Taylor and her partner, Graham Macnair, cycled 500km over the Bavarian Alps.  Their target was to raise £400 for the Appeal but they actually managed to raise just under £2,000!

Susan says “it was astonishing the support we got from people.  On the trip we didn't quite anticipate the exhaustion, sometimes I fell asleep on the dining table before we were served our dinner, and then there was the danger to arriving in a town too late to get a bed for the night so we had some narrow escapes!  On the last day we did about 130 kilometres, arrived at our final destination at 10pm, and then I fell off my bike and broke my foot!”

However, despite the tiredness and the broken bones they loved the Alps so much that five months later they packed their bags and moved there!

Charity Zip Slide

Saturday 22 May was a gloriously sunny day for the 119 brave participants who took part in the Charity Zip Slide for the Beatson Pebble Appeal.

The Zip Slide was at a height of 150ft and travelled 1000ft across the River Clyde to a landing platform, giving the fundraisers a totally exhilarating experience!  A magnificent £26,000 was raised for the Beatson Pebble Appeal by those who took part, with more money still coming in. Thank you to all who took part and to those who generously sponsored them.

If you would like to take part next year or take part in any other challenge to support the Beatson Pebble Appeal please get in touch at office@beatsonpebbleappeal.org or call 0141 330 3000.

2010 Doggy Dawdle

The fifth annual Doggy Dawdle took place at Garscube Estate on Saturday 8 May with approximately 141 walkers and 120 wagging tails taking part. A fun day was had by all, even the weather was on our side for a change!

Sponsorship raised through this event will help to support the completion and ongoing work of the hospital.  More than £19,000 has been raised over the last four years from this event, and with the 2010 sponsorship money still to come in, we are hoping to break our £25,000 target!

After more than 10 years in the planning the University of Glasgow's new Small Animal Hospital is now open thanks to the generosity of our supporters.  The patients we treat have always received a high standard of care, but with our new hospital the care and treatment will now be provided in the best possible surroundings.
