Your assessment:
After registration we aim to offer you an initial assessment with a counsellor within two weeks.
Your first assessment will last up to 50 minutes. It is an opportunity to discuss your concerns with the counsellor and work out a helpful way forward.
If you and the counsellor decide on further counselling, you will be placed on the waiting list for up to six counselling sessions. Appointments are usually weekly at the same time and last for 50 minutes.
For group counselling we will confirm the start date and keep in touch with you until the group begins.
Due to resource constraints, Counselling and Psychological Services cannot provide longer term counselling on an open-ended basis.
All of our counsellors adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
On the day of your initial assessment, please arrive five to ten minutes early to fill out a questionnaire, which is part of our evaluation system.
Think about the following questions before your assessment:
- What are your reasons for approaching the counselling service?
- Why now?
- What are you hoping to gain from having counselling?
Also, please consider the following:
- For problems with your studies you could contact your adviser of studies or course convenor
- With financial problems, difficulties with privately rented accommodation or need support in lodging an academic appeal, you could contact the SRC Advice Centre .
- If you live in a University Residence and are having problems with your flatmate(s) you could speak to the warden or a senior resident.
- If you have been feeling very low and are having difficulty sleeping, it could be helpful to see your GP.
Information available for you to take away:
- Leaflets about other resources within the University located in the waiting area
- Free booklets published by the Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS) and also MIND, on a variety of mental health topics
