Information for Parents and Relatives
Apart from faculty and staff - parents, relatives and friends are often the first to notice signs of distress displayed by a student. It is important to recognise a problem in order to take steps to ensure students receive support.
Some signs you should watch out for:
- Noticeable decline in class attendance and grades
- Extreme mood swings
- Marked changes in sleep pattern
- Severe changes in eating and/or drinking habits
- Evident emotional signs: fearful, sad, depressed or anxious
- Irritability, physical restlessness
- Substance abuse
- Experiencing serious stress in personal life
If you feel this might apply to a student you know, you could encourage them to contact us and arrange an appointment/drop-in session. If you would like to speak to us about your concerns and/or receive information about the service available at the University call us on: +44 (0) 141 330 4528. If a counsellor is not present, leave your contact number with the secretary or on answerphone, and one will get back to you.
Please note: You will not be able to speak to the counsellor seeing the student in question, in order to safeguard the trust and impartiality of the counselling relationship and in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
