Church and Academy Seminars

The Church and Academy seminars are organised by the Reverend Dr Scott Robertson and the Reverend Dr Anne Tomlinson. They are held at the University, normally on the last Thursday of the month at 1730 in No 4 The Square.

The Weekly Eucharist

The focus of our community is the celebration of the Eucharist (using the SEC 1982 liturgy). The service is held at lunchtime on Thursdays starting at 1310 in the University Memorial Chapel.

This service lasts about 30 minutes and we gather around the altar in the Chapel (the Chapel is above One A The Square and can be accessed by the steps from Professors’ Square or from the West Quadrangle).

Choral Evensong/Eucharist

Eight services of Choral Evensong or Choral Eucharist, featuring the University Chapel Choir are held during the Michaelmas and Candlemas terms (Winter and Spring) in the University Chapel on Tuesdays at 1800.

The Morning Service

Every day at 0845 Monday to Friday during semester time there is a short daily Service (10 minutes) in the Chapel. Members of the Anglican chaplaincy alternate with members of the Roman Catholic chaplaincy to lead the service on Thursday mornings and with others leading some Wednesday and Friday mornings.

University of Glasgow Chaplaincy's Services & Prayer Times

There is an active Anglican presence in the University, and members of our community come from across the world-wide Anglican Communion, including the Church of England, the Church in Wales, The Episcopal Church in the United States of America, and the Scottish Episcopal Church.

As part of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Anglican Chaplaincy at the University operates under the episcopal oversight of the bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. The current bishop, Dr Gregor Duncan, is a graduate of the University of Glasgow.

The Scottish Episcopal Church has seven historic dioceses, covering the whole of Scotland, bearing witness to faith today, and tracing a continuous history back to the earliest known Christians in the land.

Unlike most provinces in the Anglican Communion, the Scottish Episcopal Church has no archbishop or metropolitan, but rather a presiding bishop, known as the Primus, who is a ‘first among equals’ (primus inter pares), acting as the spokesman and chairman of the college of bishops. The current Primus is the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. 

Everyone is warmly invited to come to any of our services.

Our Honorary Anglican Chaplain is the Reverend Dr Kevin Francis.  Kevin is a member of the University staff, with two quite contrasting roles:

• he teaches Politics in the School of Social and Political Sciences (where he also holds a small Fellowship in Citizenship studies);
• and he is also one of the two Coordinators for the University’s highly successful Access programme in the Centre for Open Studies.

Kevin had been our Lay Chaplain for four years before being  ordained Deacon in the University Chapel in September 2011 and then being ordained Priest at St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow in September 2012.

Kevin is serving a joint title for his curacy - in addition to his role as Honorary Chaplain to the Anglican community here at the University, he is also as Honorary Assistant Curate at St Bride’s, Hyndland. (St Bride’s is thus where you will normally find him on a Sunday.)

As Anglican Chaplain, he is ex officio Hon Vice-President of the University’s Students’ Anglican Society (AngSoc), working closely with the students on the AngSoc Committee and all its members.

Kevin has a particular concern to help in the discernment of vocations among the Anglican community at the University, both staff and students; but he is here to help, guide and give pastoral support to all the members of our community.

The Anglican Society of students at Glasgow University (AngSoc)

We have once again, after a lapse of many years, a student society for all members of our Anglican community* who are students. So whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate (Diploma, Master, Doctoral) student, full-time or part-time, at Crichton or the Glasgow campus, please do join the Society.
