UNIVERSITY of GLASGOW

Chaplaincy

Anglicans in the University

Welcome!

To all our Anglican students, staff and visitors from England, Wales, Ireland, from across the world - and from here in Scotland.

There is an active Anglican presence in the University; and members of our community come from across the world-wide Anglican Communion, including the Church of England, the Church in Wales, ECUSA; as well as from our home church here in Scotland, the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The Scottish Episcopal Church (the SEC) has seven historic dioceses covering the whole of Scotland, bearing witness to faith today, and tracing a history back to the earliest known Christians in Scotland. The Scottish Episcopal Church has Provincial status within the Anglican Communion and its leader (The Primus) has Archiepiscopal/Primatial rank. The Scottish Episcopal Church is currently led by the Most Reverend David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane.

The City of Glasgow lies in the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. Our Bishop is the Right Reverend Dr Gregor Duncan. Bishop Gregor is the former Dean of the Diocese and has been a priest in the Diocese for more than twenty years. He is also a graduate of this University! You will find links to the websites of both the SEC and the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway on this page. There are many Scottish Episcopal Churches in Glasgow and throughout Scotland and you will be able to find details of these through those links.

ORDINATION of the ANGLICAN CHAPLAIN

Kevin Francis, Chaplain to the University’s Anglican community, was ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, the Rt Rev’d Dr Gregor Duncan, on Sunday 25th September 2011 at 2pm in the University Chapel.

More than 200 people gathered in the Chapel to witness and take part in this event in which Church and University came together. Vice-Principal Professor Neal Juster welcomed everyone on behalf of the University; The University Chaplain, The Rev’d Stuart MacQuarrie, preached on the theme of servanthood; Rev’d Dr AKM Adam intoned the Litany; and the Chapel Choir sang superbly throughout the service: the Communion setting (Darke in E, Collegium Regale), the Introit (Stanford, Beati quorum via) the Communion Anthems (Byrd Ave verum Corpus and Tallis O sacrum convivium) and as the Post-Communion Motet, a new setting of George Herbert’s great poem, The Call, composed for the occasion by Robin Downie, Emeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy, and Kevin’s mentor and former tutor.

Kevin is serving a joint title for his curacy: he continues here at the University as Hon Chaplain to the Anglican community (students and staff) and also as Hon Assistant Curate at St Bride’s, Hyndland.

Services

The Weekly Eucharist: The focus of our community is the celebration of the Eucharist (using the SEC 1982 liturgy). The service is held at lunchtime on Thursdays starting at 1:10pm in the University Memorial Chapel. This service lasts about 30 minutes and we gather around the altar in the Chapel (the Chapel is above One A The Square and can be accessed by the steps from Professors’ Square or from the West Quadrangle).

This is a quiet, simple, said service – a moment of calm in the busy world of work and studies. All are welcome to join us and to receive communion. Afterwards we usually adjourn for coffee/tea and a chat in One A The Square.

Occasionally the Thursday service takes the form of Administration of the Reserved Sacrament; or is simply a short service of prayer and reflection.

Choral Evensong: Eight services of Choral Evensong, featuring the University’s own (and very excellent) Chapel Choir are held during the Michaelmas and Candlemas (Winter and Spring) terms also in the University Chapel (Tuesdays at 6:00pm).

The Morning Service: Every day at 08.45 am Monday to Friday during semester time there is a short daily Service (10 minutes) in the Chapel. The Service is led by students and staff of the University. Most days it follows a similar order to the Service held each morning in Iona Abbey. All members of the Anglican community at the University (students, staff and visitors) are welcome at this short service of reading, reflection and prayer. Members of the Anglican chaplaincy alternate with members of the Roman Catholic chaplaincy to lead the service on Thursday mornings.

All these services can be followed online via the Chapel webcam (at: www.gla.ac.uk/services/chaplaincy/chapelservices/).
