This program offers volunteers an absolutely incomparable hands on experience working with Africa’s world famous “Big-Five” animals – The Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Rhinoceros, as well as a multitude of Africa’s wildlife, all within a malaria-free, private game reserve. Volunteers will become crucial team members of the dedicated rangers and conservation units running the renowned Garden Route Game Lodge in the heart of Africa. You will learn numerous facets of running a game reserve and leave here with skills that will open up a huge diversity of opportunities within the wildlife industry. Come and make memories that will last you a lifetime. More importantly this program allows you to contribute to returning a portion of African land back to its original state – an African savannah teaming with wildlife. |

Oceans was founded by four scientists with an entrepreneurial edge. Their aim was to create a unique marine research institute, providing and facilitating innovative and dynamic marine research relevant to the management and conservation of Southern Africa’s charismatic marine life. In addition to this, Oceans also offers an unparalleled internship program in which successful applicants are able to gain hands on training in researching great white sharks and other marine predators off the coast of South Africa. This model had proved overwhelmingly successful, and with time the organisation has branched out to include divisions focusing on eco-tourism, environmental journalism and educational outreach. The organisation has introduced a number of additional internship and volunteer opportunities in partnership with local wildlife, adventure and education organisations. The Oceans Campus was created to host participants on these programs in a single campus setting where students, volunteers and interns could live together, share their ideas, dreams and ambitions, whilst experiencing some of Africa's most amazing natural environment programs. Oceans Campus is offering this internship in collaboration with Hein Schoeman, Garden Route Game Lodge’s wildlife manager and local conservationist, whose passion for conservation and education led to the birth of the Umkhondo Project. Umkhondo is the Xhosa word for footprint, or a trace suggesting something moved through, was once present or was otherwise important. Umkhondo summarises the programs central vision: to develop a long term self-sustaining natural environment, create community awareness, expand the existing reserve, continue its successful cheetah breeding program and most importantly... to make a difference. |
