The workplace Experience Programme for International Students is a project delivered by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services in Scotland (AGCAS Scotland). Funded by the Scottish Government the programme aims to develop a range of opportunities enabling international students to engage with the workplace in Scotland.
What types of workplace experience activities are available through the programme?
There are a range of possible interactions with international students throughout the Workplace Experience Programme:
- Case Studies - scenario based activities allowing students to work in groups to solve typical industry challenges. May provide interesting, innovative feedback on alternative solutions.
- Mentoring - a series of agreed interactions including meetings, telephone conversations and email contact with a student over an extended period of time to provide support and assist development of skills required for future employability.
- Visit - a group of students visiting your organisation to gain an insight to your organisation and industry.
- Work placement - by employing a student on a placement your company can access motivated and knowledgeable international students to provide a cost effective resource to undertake specific tasks.
- Work shadowing - enhancing students understanding of the world of work in Scotland by shadowing a member of staff.
The benefits of engaging with an international student:
- A cost effective way to tackle projects that contribute towards business growth and productivity
- International students bring new ideas and specialist knowledge
- Many will bring language skills and knowledge of overseas markets
- Technical skills, IT skills and a knowledge of new developments
- Providing staff with opportunities through mentoring a student to use and develop management skills.
- Awareness of the latest research through closer links to universities
How to get involved?
The Workplace Experience Programme team will be coordinating all opportunities and will be happy to answer any questions about the project. There are two dedicated Workplace Experience Coordinators who will manage the operation of the programme along with the Programme Administrator. We can provide assistance with developing person specifications for opportunities and, in some cases, short listing applications.
