The Mechanics of Club 21

We ask you to:

  • Define a piece of work or project you wish to be undertaken that will add value to your organisation and will benefit a student's development.
  • Discuss your organisation's requirements with us at the start of the academic year (or at other times where appropriate). You will have the opportunity to specify the number of student placements/scholarships you can provide and prepare a person specification of the type of student(s) most suited to your business needs. You will also be able to decide on the location and duration of the placement.
  • Make interview arrangements for suitable candidates once we have forwarded you the application forms and make the final selection of candidates.
  • Appoint a supervisor/mentor for the placement student who will help the student set objectives at the start of the placement and monitor the student's progress on placement. The placement student will be given a Club 21 Placement Learning Diary and the supervisor/mentor is asked to provide the student with support and guidance to allow the student to complete the diary.
  • Consider providing scholarships of £1000 per student per academic year.

We will:

  • Prepare adverts for all Club 21 placements/scholarships and publicise these to the students via academic departments/student emaill, our website and departmental notice boards.
  • Co-ordinate the applications process and monitor the quality of applications.
  • Support your organisation through the application process.
  • Brief both your organisation and the student(s) prior to placement.
  • Maintain regular contact with your organisation and the student(s) during placement.
  • Use student and employer feedback to monitor and improve the effectiveness of Club 21.

On placement, our students will be expected to:

  • Act as ambassadors for the University of Glasgow.
  • Follow the policies and procedures set out by each individual organisation.
  • Record their experiences via the Club 21 Placement Learning Diary which we will supply, and complete an evaluation form on the placement experience.

In 2008, our Club 21 placement student was assigned to the HR department and undertook several pieces of project work, which were completed to the highest standard. An undergraduate certainly does bring a fresh perspective to the workplace." Elaine Neilan, Recruitment Manager, Amor Group.
