Shifting into Top Gear…
I wanted to do a placement as I realised that I needed something more solid on my CV. I had worked for a number of summers in student administration jobs but I wanted a position where I could get more responsibility, utilise the existing skills I had and acquire some new ones.
I actively looked for a local placement, as I was unable to move away due to personal circumstances. I researched placement and contact details of employers using my department and from vacancies within the Careers Service. I was especially looking for marketing opportunities and when I received an email about Club 21 and the vacancy to work with Arnold Clark, from the Careers Service, I went for it as I had already worked for Arnold Clark in a student summer job and had liked the company.
The selection process involved completing an application form, from which I received a letter telling me that I'd been initially short-listed for the place, I was then informed that I'd been successful. I organised an appointment with the Managing Director where we discussed what I wanted from the placement and what was possible. The meeting was interesting and challenging as I found myself having to negotiate what my placement would involve. However, this was made easy as the MD was very supportive and tried to accommodate the subjects I had studied and was interested in.
It was great applying the knowledge I had learned at University and being able to put a practical slant on academic learning. I also got to see the more business and strategic side of the company which had not been possible during my summer job there previously. I was involved in 3 different projects that are going to be adopted by the company. Working on real things feels like you are actually doing something worthwhile and meaningful.
The placement exceeded my expectations. I never expected it to be so hands on! I was given a lot of responsibility, which gave me the chance to use my initiative. The marketing manager was there to say whether or not he approved and support me in my decision-making. In the end I was offered a job with the company and although I have decided to return to do a Masters, I have been told that they will consider an application from me at anytime.
The advice I would give to other students considering a placement but are unsure whether or not it is for them is that you need to be focused and make sure you get the most out of your placement that you can. Don't take it personally if managers are too busy to see you initially. Be persistent and prepared to negotiate what you need but remember not to annoy people too much because at the end of the day, you want a good reference. Try and confirm things you will be doing as much as possible in advance and remember that it is important to be flexible on your placement as well. Sometimes you have to compromise and muck in with other areas but it is a great experience and it has really developed my confidence and given me a great insight into business.
