This summer I applied through Club 21 for a placement with Capability Scotland's summer play scheme as a play leader. When I read the application information it looked like a fantastic opportunity. I am currently studying for a Psychology degree which I hope will lead me to eventually qualify as an Educational Psychologist. This placement looked like a perfect chance to gain experience in a field of work which interests me so much.
I attended two pre-start induction evenings and found them very helpful. I met lots of people and realised that there were many people who had never done anything like this before, but there were also very experienced people there too, to ask for help or advice. The information on epilepsy and autism was extremely helpful and practical, and they pointed out things to be careful of when working with children with autism, like not forcing eye contact or being very careful how you phrase things as they can be taken too literally by the children. At university the emphasis always seems to be on the theories or causes behind a condition but this does not prepare you to deal with everyday situations. The induction evenings gave me more confidence to know that I would be able to handle situations well.
The six weeks of the play scheme flew by. I have learned a lot about autism and how differently it presents itself in every child, and the importance of getting to know a child well so we can help them get the most out of the play scheme. I have learned a lot about the rules and procedures that all staff must be aware of, like accident reports and risk assessments, and the importance of staff being aware of any child's behaviour which may put themselves or others in danger. However, the biggest difference I noticed by the end of the play scheme was in myself, and in the new confidence I had in myself and my ability to do the job well.
I had a fantastic time working for Capability Scotland and have so many great memories that I will hold on to forever. I have an even greater passion for this type of work now, and it will always be my aim to carry on working in this kind of area. I have put my name down to work during the year for Capability Scotland in their clubs and play schemes, and also hope to do voluntary befriending.
