During third year, talk of placements and their invaluable benefits plague students who are busy juggling coursework, group projects and exams with part-time jobs- not to mention an all-important social life. With the summer looming, I became aware that gaining experience in the field of my degree subject would separate me from the thousands of other graduates who would be applying for the same jobs, and decided to take advantage of the free University of Glasgow project, Club 21. After applying for several placements relating to my degree, and gaining interview experience, I was selected for a placement with AMEC in their Marketing and Business Development Department. The placement lasted twelve weeks, and has given me an invaluable life experience, and opportunities to make an array of contacts. AMEC is a global project management and construction company, offering a wealth of opportunity both within the UK and abroad. Working in such an environment taught me to broaden my outlook and consider a wider range of industries for employment, and gave me an insight into a first job as a graduate.
Having applied through Club 21, I was reassured that the company was trustworthy, and that the programme provided me with a support network throughout the placement. Club 21 encourages supervisors to give feedback and suggestions on a student's strengths and weaknesses- a benefit I may not have enjoyed had I found my own placement. My placement experience has allowed me to build a network of contacts and enhance my CV in the process.
