I spent twelve weeks working in Pollok Credit Union on a Club 21 placement. As a 21 year old who has spent the past three years at university, I must admit it was a slight shock to my system working 9 til 5 every day! However, I can honestly say that I feel I have gained so much from my placement, both professionally and personally.
The ethos of credit unions is very much in keeping with my own personal values, which is why I was initially drawn to this placement opportunity. The philosophy of the organisation, to help the local community, is clear and permeates throughout the workplace, with all the staff and volunteers being very much committed to the work that they do. This makes Pollok Credit Union a very enjoyable place to work.
I worked towards the launch of a brand new organisation, the Scottish Financial Inclusion Services, which was essentially produced by Jim Garrity, the Manager of Pollok Credit Union. For the launch of the organisation, I organised marketing materials, designed a logo, aided in website design. and helped with administration and operations management. Also (my favourite part of my placement) I worked with two others to organise two launch events for the organisation. One of these was very high profile, and attended by MSPs including Malcolm Chisholm. Talk about networking! As I wish to enter into a career in events management, this was excellent experience for me, and confirmed my interest in this career choice.
Overall, my placement was very enjoyable, so much so that I would like to continue to be involved in the projects on a voluntary basis, after my placement is over. Through working at Pollok Credit Union, I was offered another placement opportunity with a related company, which I will definitely be considering.
I would recommend a Club 21 placement to any student who would like to gain insight into the world of work and/or some experience in a particular field of work. I feel that I have reaped great benefit from it, and am so glad I decided to do it.
