Get Prepared
Beforehand
When you arrive at the Fair you may be surprised at the number of people who are there. For this reason it is important to do some preparation before you get there.
It's ok to attend the fair simply to gather information. However, if you are looking for a job, employers will expect you to be informed and prepared. Here are a few tips to ensure that you look professional, organised and enthusiastic:
- If you can, arrive with a clear idea of the type of work you want to do. If you are still unclear about this, make an appointment with a Careers Adviser before or at the Fair to discuss your options.
- Research the companies that are going to be there, you may be surprised at the opportunities they offer. You can check out our 'Who's Exhibiting?' section for direct links to exhibitors websites. If you come across as confident and well informed about a particular organisation, you will make a much better impression.
- A well-presented and updated CV is a must. If necessary, get it checked over by your university Careers Adviser beforehand.
On the Day
- If you are keen to make a good impression on potential employers then consider dressing the part with smart clothes.
- Bring several copies of your updated CV, so if a company interests you, you can leave a copy with them.
- If you are given an application form at the Fair, don't rush to complete it straight away. Take it home where you will have time to reflect on the questions, or, if the employer is looking for an immediate response, take it to a writing area at the Fair and spend time making a good application.
- Before you approach a stand prepare some questions to ask and be prepared to answer some questions yourself!
