Finding the archives doesn’t mean you will definitely be able to read them.  Palaeography is the study of old handwriting and there are several ways of acquiring the skills.

University of Glasgow courses

The University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Arts runs courses in Early Modern and Medieval Palaeography suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. You can discuss this course option with your Advisor of Studies.

The National Archives - a practical online tutorial for English documents 1500-1800.

Scottish Handwriting.com – a website offering online tuition in palaeography for historians, genealogists and other researchers who have problems reading manuscript historical records written in Scotland in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
