Vision for 2010 and beyond

Managing location, accommodation and facilities

  • A space that enables a meaningful interaction between service professionals, service users and researchers and others who study that interaction.

  • A space that surpasses all current professional standards of access and preservation.

  • A space that openly displays a sense of pride in the heritage of the University, the City and the Nation.

  • At the virtual and actual heart of a University campus that is accessible to all with a need for learning.

  • Facilities to undertake archival management (selection, preservation and access) of all documents, including digital, recognised as having a long term corporate memory value.

Delivering quality services

  • Responsive to the needs of the University and the wider stakeholder community.  The current University community will be strengthened by active engagement with the knowledge transferred from previous generations.

  • A leader of - and role model to - others in the international Higher Education Sector. The metrics will be available to demonstrate that we are among the top 10 most visited University Archives in Europe.

  • A range of high quality archive skills courses for staff and students of all relevant disciplines producing researchers with sound core skills.

  • A website that empowers the user to answer the majority of their own simple information requests.

  • A revenue generating range of pay per view archive resources for external and non-academic website visitors.

  • A digitise on demand service will contribute to an online catalogue that links to digitised images.

Developing the research collections

  • Pre-selected archives flow into the University Archive to document all aspects of University staff and student activities.

  • Where they fit with our collection policy, all formats of archives will be acquired. This will include, where appropriate, external partnership arrangements including continuing our existing partnership with the Scottish Screen Archive for moving images.

  • Communication with stakeholders will be a continual two-way process to inform collection selection and appraisal.

Enhancing our reputation and image

  • Hailed to be a centre of excellence in all aspects of our mission to select, preserve and make accessible the archives in our custody.

  • The University of Glasgow is nationally and internationally recognised as home to some of the world’s most important University and Business archive collections.

  • Cited as a role model to other Universities seeking to benchmark service provision.

Ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and innovation

  • A workforce committed to high quality service delivery and to undertaking necessary research and learning to develop that service.

  • Collaborating on leading edge archive service delivery research.

  • Resources will continue to be available for all core activities.

  • Funding streams will be diverse to limit the impact of loss.
