Where will I be based?

Your time will be split between:

  • attending formal lectures at Edinburgh's Telford College
  • gaining practical experience at the Small Animal Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow
  • gaining further practical experience in a veterinary practice placement
  • working in the PDSA in Glasgow

How long is the course?

The full-time course begins in mid August and takes two and a half years to complete.

Year 1 is 44 weeks and Year 2 is 56 weeks.

Year 1

In Year 1 students study for 9 weeks at Edinburgh's Telford College, then 23 weeks practical at The University of Glasgow's Small Animal Hospital and 12 weeks in a veterinary practice.

Year 2

In the 2nd Year students study for 16 weeks at Edinburgh's Telford College, then 24 weeks practical at The University of Glasgow's Small Animal Hospital and 16 weeks in a veterinary practice.

What happens in the Small Animal Hospital?

When at the Small Animal Hospital you will be involved in rotations in the hospital. This will include time spent in theatre, radiography, ICU, surgical, medical and exotic wards, reception and laboratory work. A portfolio of work must be produced before the 1st year (level II) and 2nd year (level III) exams. You will be given assistance with planning and collection of cases by an appointed assessor, of which we have 9 and an Internal Verifier. Practical assessments take place throughout the year to prepare you for the practical exam in level III.
