Student life

Some examples of activities offered by the School to enrich the student experience:

Undergraduate

ESH Honours Reading Party - During this two-day trip, Junior Honours students in Economic & Social History take part in formal group exercises, course information sessions and informal gatherings, all of which contribute to the sense of identity in the subject, and to the very good relations between our students and staff.

Society of Economic & Social History - A student-run group that provides a platform for ESH students of all levels of study to meet up, get to know each other and let off steam in a familiar setting.

Postgraduate

CEES Doctoral Work In Progress Workshops - The format for the workshops (which are for both staff and postgraduates) is flexible, but broadly speaking each session will be taken by one person who will give a short presentation on an aspect of their work (e.g. overview of their research design for those just starting out; a discussion of methodological, fieldwork, ethical, writing or publication issues for those further down the line) with a view to eliciting feedback / discussion in an informal and supportive setting. The workshops also provide a useful forum to 'trial run' conference papers etc. All CEES research students are expected to attend these workshops.

CRCEES Summer School - Each year around 20 places are available for Postgraduate students. The Summer School has in previous years been held in Poland, Estonia and Hungary, giving students a unique opportunity to study at partner universities, taking part in lectures and excursions. Flights, accommodation and breakfast are included. Download details on the CRCEES Summer School 2011 (PDF 140 KB)

Historical Perspectives - This student-run society was established in 2003 for postgraduates researching history and economic & social history at the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. The group give Masters and PhD students the opportunity to present their work to their peers in an informal atmosphere as well as providing the occasion to meet and socialise with other postgraduates. Historical Perspectives also runs a seminar series and holds an annual conference.

Politics PGR Annual Retreat - These annual overnight retreats for Politics research students and staff are intended to foster an esprit de corps among the students and to assist the assimilation and acculturation of new students.

Politics Postgraduate Research Seminar - The Seminar meets fortnightly to deal with practical questions (research trip organisation, conference participation, getting published, preparation for the viva) and to discuss intellectual questions of general concern.

Sociology Away Day - This annual session is held outside Glasgow and allows students to mix in a congenial, low-key atmosphere.

Alumni

Economic & Social History Alumni - Welcome back to any graduates of the Department! We're always delighted to hear from our former students. We regularly invite alumni back to talk to our current undergraduate students about employment opportunities. We are keen to build on our programme of talks, so whatever you have gone on to do we are interested to know and would be very pleased if you could offer a talk.

Real Estate, Planning & Regeneration (REPR) Alumni Association - Established by graduates of the REPR course, the Alumni Association was created to enable alumni and current students to keep in touch, exchange ideas and build partnerships for future career development.
