Assessing Accession - Central and Eastern Europe in the EU

An interdisciplinary networking initiative bringing together researchers, academics, students and practitioners/stakeholders whose research focusses on an enlarged EU following the accession of 10 Central and East European countries since 2004.

Glasgow Baltic Research Unit

Providing a framework for specialists from the social sciences and arts, who study Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and their links to the surrounding region and the wider Europe.

History, Legacy and Social Transformation

Building on CEES’ longstanding strengths concerning the historical processes at work within the former socialist region, this grouping has broadened since 2008 to incorporate legacy issues and more recent societal shifts across the region. 

Identity, Culture and Welfare

Building on longstanding strengths concerning issues of identity and culture. Its work also has strong links with the substantive themes underpinning the Glasgow Baltic Research Unit

Methodology and Practice

This research theme cuts across the other 4 research groupings and is underpinned by funding from the AHRC and the European Commission. It is underpinned by the Translating Russia and East European Cultures (TREEC) initiative, which emerged out of an AHRC Research Networking grant exploring themes of knowledge exchange, method and practice within the multi-disciplinary context of area studies.
