Nicolas obtained his PhD at the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay, France, with a thesis on the modelling of the helium spectrum in solar prominences. He then moved to Aberystwyth University (Wales) to continue his research as a postdoctoral researcher in the Solar System Physics group. He joined the University of Glasgow in 2007 as a Lecturer in the Astronomy & Astrophysics group.
His research interests are in understanding complex processes taking place in the Sun's atmosphere and which affect Space Weather. These often involve prominences and flares. His work consists in radiative transfer modelling, spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere, and automatic image processing.
