Ernst & Young: Know your Strengths Workshop

Ernst & Young’s Know your Strengths session will make you become more aware of your individual strengths and help you realise how using your strengths advantageously can secure a ‘best fit’ career.

Michael Kaethler is an independent consultant specialising in humanitarian protection and human rights. He has conducted research and assessments with the United Nations in several countries, focusing on West Africa, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Current projects emphasise the interplays of place, people and governance of cities. Mr Kaethler holds a Master of Arts in Central and Eastern European Studies from the University of Glasgow, and a Masters of Eng. in Human Settlements from KU Leuven.

A cup of coffee with Mhairi McDonald, UK Department for International Development

Time: 11 am - 12 noon

Venue: Main Building Room253 (Gilbert Scott Conference Suite)

Mhairi studied Portuguese and Spanish at undergraduate level at Glasgow and graduated in June 2013. She now works as a graduate at the UK Department for International Development in the Multilateral Aid Policy team assessing multilateral organisations such as the UN, aid policy and writing briefings for "Parliamentary Questions" for Government Ministers. Her language skills are required for events such as the "Open Government Partnership Summit" which 55 member countries attend.

Starting your own business

If you have ever thought about self-employment, becoming freelance, or setting up your own business, and don't really know where to start, this session will give you a broad understanding of what it takes to turn your idea into a reality. It's informative, interactive and fun and at the end of it you will be better equipped to consider whether or not you want to be your own boss.

Gaining Work Experience

This session will focus on the value of part-time work, how to search for part-time work, avoiding scams, legal rights and issues and how to adjust your applications to match the job you are applying for.

Foreign Language interview skills

You've found a job that offers what you want. The successful applicant must speak a foreign language. You speak that language but you want to be sure you are ready for the interview, to feel confident. Or maybe you are at an earlier stage in your job search but know that you will need your language skills and want to be prepared.

This workshop will give you an insight into the interview process for positions involving modern foreign language skills.

You will:

  • undergo a mock-assessment in language-specific groups;
  • find out what is expected of you during an interview conducted entirely in the foreign language and how to best prepare for it;
  • Receive peer and assessor feedback on your performance.
  • Receive advice on how to address any gaps in knowledge or skills identified

 

Languages offered

French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Slavonic, Spanish

Please note that due to high demand this session will be open to Senior Honours students only.

Andrew graduated in Slavonic Studies in 1997 and is now European Media Director at Human Rights Watch.  Based in Brussels, he is responsible for international media outreach and strategy. In the past Andrew worked as Communications Director of the International Crisis Group and as a journalist reporting from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Nigeria, Colombia, and Indonesia.

A cup of coffee with Dickon Copsey, College Employability Officer, University of Glasgow, College of Social Sciences and Declan Blench, Interpreter, European Union, Brussels

Dickon Copsey studied German at Glasgow at undergraduate and Ph.D. level. After his Ph.D. he joined a Schools Widening Participation programme as Top-Up Programme Administrator (which was more interesting than the title suggests…) and has worked for the University ever since. He is currently an Employability Officer for the College of Social Sciences at the University of Glasgow.

Declan Blench studied Italian and German at undergraduate level at Glasgow before going on to complete the MA in Interpreting and Translating at Bath University. He works as a freelance translator and interpreter for translation agencies, Amazon, and the institutions of the European Union.

Your period abroad - a smart career move! - Photo exhibition and networking event

Visit our year abroad photo exhibition and join us for an informal networking evening. See the final entries of this year's SMLC photo competition “Your year abroad - a smart career move” and hear the winner announced.

If you haven’t been abroad yet… Come and hear returned SMLC students talk about their time abroad and how the experiences they gained have made them stand out from the recruitment crowd.

If you have been abroad already... Come along and share your experiences with students preparing to go abroad and chat to other returned SMLC students about their time abroad.

You may even decide to join the photo competition and perhaps see your picture displayed.

Ernst & Young - Mock Assessment Centres

 Ernst & Young’s mock assessment centre provides guidance, tips and insights into assessment centres and interviews. The 1.5 hour long session will equip you with the skills you need to succeed at assessment centres and interviews and give the opportunity to practice in a safe environment.

You will receive feedback on your performance and we will help you to identify your individual strengths.

Join this interactive session lead by EY graduate recruitment experts to get a head start!  You can have your recruitment questions answered, get some interview and group exercise practice and get some valuable insight into the recruitment and selection process.

An hour at lunchtime with Tom Hargreaves, Technology Consultant, IBM


Time: 12.30 - 1.30

Venue: Seminar Room, Gilchrist Postgraduate Club

Tom studied German and History at Glasgow between 2006 and 2011. After graduating he joined IBM at the end of 2011 as a Technology Consultant. His job involves designing technological solutions to business challenges that IBM clients have. This involves working at client offices around the UK and Europe where he works with a team on consultants and client staff. Since joining IBM almost two years ago he has worked on two major projects, one at Scottish Power in Glasgow and a second at N-power in Leeds, where he is currently based.

This informal session is part of the An Hour at Lunchtime with... Series which gives current students an opportunity to meet arts graduates who have gone from where you are now to real-life members of the working population. Use these events as a way to find out more if they are doing a job you are interested in and to make a good contact. Even if you are not interested in the job they are doing these talks are extremely illuminating as you get the chance to ask your questions and hear about the interesting journeys that Arts Graduates can find themselves going on.

The session will begin with the Careers Adviser interviewing the Alumnus then it will open to the floor for a Q&A.
