I am a medical sociologist whose research has ranged from studying alcohol problems in the Western Isles to work on the effects of unemployment upon health. My more recent research has focused on men's lay health beliefs, on the factors leading to the cessation of heroin use, and on young men's attitudes towards alcohol treatment services. I am currently analysing data and publishing articles from projects on the influence of ethnic background on oral health ideas and practices, and on the views and knowledge that asylum seekers have of health services.
I make regular conference contributions at National and International level: I present yearly at the UK Medical Sociology Conference. I have also made presentations to the European Medical Sociology Conferences in Vienna and Budapest.
I review research proposals for the ESRC and the AERC. I have refereed articles for numerous academic journals: Addiction; Addiction Research; Drug and Alcohol Dependence; The Sociological Review; Social Sciences in Health; Mortality; Mental Health, Religion and Culture; European Journal of Dental Education; Health Education Journal; Sociology of Health and Illness; and Ethnicity and Health. I am also invited to review books in the fields of medical sociology, social psychology and religion and mental health.
