I am a public health researcher with a particular interest in the health of mothers and children. The two main strands of my research in recent years have been the epidemiology of birth defects and injury – including:

  • The use of a birth defects register to monitor trends in prevalence
  • The apparently high risk in Glasgow of neural tube defects, omphalocele and other defects
  • The effectiveness of injury and violence prevention measures
  • The role of injury surveillance systems in prevention

I introduced and evaluated a Canadian paediatric injury surveillance system (CHIRPP) to the UK in 1993. Since 1997, I have led a series of EC funded international reviews of injury and suicide epidemiology and prevention in the European Union funded by the EC as part of its injury prevention programme.

I am currently leading a major epidemiological study of road casualties – and their prevention by speed cameras - in the Strathclyde Region, sponsored by the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership. This work forms the basis of one of my PhD students, Susanne Jeffrey, who has demonstrated that these cameras make a significant contribution to the reduction in road casualties of all severities but especial fatalities.
