My main research interest is cardiac electrophysiology, both cellular and clinical. Techniques have been developed to study the electrophysiology of single human atrial myocytes, using tissue samples obtained from patients undergoing routine cardiac surgery. Collaborating with Dr AJ Workman and Professor KA Kane, we have undertaken studies with the aim of improving the understanding of changes associated with atrial fibrillation and to clarify underlying mechanisms of potential therapies. We found that chronic treatment with beta-blocking drugs was associated with changes in the atrial cellular electrophysiology. The mechanisms underlying this pharmacological remodelling are being investigated. We showed that 5-hydroxytryptamine, which is released by aggregating platelets, may exert arrhythmogenic actions, which may be suppressed in atria which have undergone electrical remodelling once atrial fibrillation is chronic.

My clinical interests include therapeutic and epidemiologic investigations of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation.
