New Educational Opportunities in Spiritual Care in Health Care / Healthcare Chaplaincy

The MSc (Med Sci) in Health Care is offering a new opportunity for healthcare professionals of all disciplines to study spiritual care alongside their chosen specialty or focus their studies on spiritual care and its art and practice.

Alongside this a  programme leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Chaplaincy has also been developed to provide professional education in spiritual and religious care for existing chaplains and those seeking to enter the profession.

Spiritual care features in the standards, capabilities and competencies frameworks of all healthcare disciplines. It is often described as being integral to healthcare practice. However, what that spiritual care is or how it should be practiced is often vague and unclear.

Two 20 credit courses are now available within the MSc (Med Sci) in Health Care to help healthcare professionals understand spiritual care in its broadest sense and through structured study reflect on their professional practice and develop knowledge, skills and competence in spiritual care:

  • Providing spiritual and religious care in healthcare
  • Professional practice in spiritual and religious care in healthcare

As Healthcare Chaplaincy in the UK works towards registration as a healthcare profession the Healthcare Chaplaincy PGC  programme is a recognised qualification for professional registration with the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy.

Students complete the two courses above plus one additional 20 credit course:

  • Promoting Specialist / Advanced Practice

Successful students can continue and integrate the programme into a Diploma or MSc. (MedSci) in Healthcare (Chaplaincy).
