Transfers into Medicine
MBChB degree programme
Transfers from the University of Glasgow’s College of Science and Engineering
Transfers from other colleges rarely occur, as student numbers must be maintained within departments and institutions. Transfers occasionally occur from other courses within the University of Glasgow’s College of Science and Engineering - particularly those in life sciences - where students have achieved at a particularly high level in their summative assessments. Consideration is also given to prior achievement both academic and non-academic. All those under consideration will be interviewed. However, this depends very much on whether places are available after allocating places to UCAS applicants. An interview or entry is not guaranteed. Application forms are available from the MBChB General Office after 1 February and the deadline for applications is 1 May in the proposed year of transfer.
We do not consider science transfer applicants who have also applied for admission via UCAS and have been unsuccessful in the same year. Applicants can only apply once in the same admissions cycle.
Applications from applicants studying medicine at another institution
The University of Glasgow Medical School does not normally consider applications from applicants studying medicine at another institution, unless there is a formal transfer system between Medical Schools. Very occasionally the Medical School is in a position to consider requests for transfer under exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances would normally include severe health problems or adverse personal circumstances. Financial circumstances are not taken into consideration. If an applicant feels that they have faced exceptional circumstances, they should contact the Admissions Administrator for further information. An interview may be required. If successful, the year of entry granted will depend on year group numbers of existing MBChB students and the clinical and academic experience obtained by the applicant to date, in comparison to the MBChB course at the University of Glasgow. Please note that if successful, entry is likely to be into year 1 of the 5 year course.
If you feel that you have faced exceptional circumstances, please contact the Admissions Administrator for the application procedure and further information.
Applications for transfer under exceptional circumstances must be received by the Admission Administrator by 15 October for consideration for entry in September the following year.
Transfers from a degree programme other than medicine
Applications from applicants, who have commenced a degree programme other than medicine, can apply through UCAS and have their application considered, providing they meet entry requirements within the last five years of the entry date. Priority will be given to applicants who are school leavers, graduates or completing access courses.
