Background and Outline

Most doctors during their careers will be directly or indirectly involved in planning a new facility or changing the existing design of their workplace.  And yet, there is very little formal training in the approach how to design environment that is optimal for healing and recovery.

This module will familiarise you with the concept of evidence-based design applied to  healthcare environment and  allow you to explore the role visual arts play in healthcare environment and in patient wellbeing.

The participants will explore the history of hospitals and the contribution of visual arts to their design.  They will get familiarized with contemporary trends in hospital design. They will also familiarize themselves with the work of Art in Hospital – an organization devoted   to stimulating creative expression of people who stay in hospital environment.

During the practical part of this SSC the participants will work with medical illustrators in the Medical Illustration Department and gain essential graphic presentation skills.

Each student will be asked to choose a topic from the pool of individual projects on which s/he will be required to  write a short essay and  give an oral presentation.

1. To explore the role hospital environment plays in healing and recovery.
2. To understand the concept of evidence-based design in healthcare.
3.  To explore  the role of the visual arts in the design of hospital environment and their contribution to patient wellbeing.
3. To acquire basic graphic presentation skills.


Knowledge

The participants will gain understanding of principles behind the design of healthcare spaces and will learn how a clinician can contribute to this process.

Skills
The participants will acquire the basic skills in graphic design as applied to medical presentations. These will be useful in further study and later in the medical training.


Attitudes

The SSC is designed to make participants aware of the role healthcare environment and, more generally, the visual arts play in healing and recovery.

This SSC  will equip you with essential knowledge about the approach to the design of  healthcare space:  this will  help you to deal with these issues during your professional career.


The SSC  format

The tutorials will be the backbone of the SSC. A substantial portion of time will be self-learning using library resources and the internet. There will be practical sessions in Glasgow hospitals and art galleries. The graphic design part will be conducted in the Medical Illustration Department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Students will be required to write a short essay on a chosen topic and give an oral presentation, using the newly acquired skills.  You will also be asked to keep a diary throughout the duration of the module.



Assessment

  • Individual assessment by the co-ordinator/assesasment of the  diary   30%
  • Oral presentation (with elements of graphic design)   30%
  • Essay  40%
