Academic Paediatrics and Child Health
There are opportunities to develop a career in ‘Academic Paediatrics’ and chances to obtain experience in research at every stage of training to be a paediatrician. They are listed below.
Undergraduate
BSc Med Sci, Women and Children's Health 1 year, at end of 3rd undergraduate year
This course introduces students to the basic and clinical sciences that underpin paediatrics and child health, as well as human nutrition, reproductive, fetal medicine, and clinical genetics.

Postgraduate
Academic FY Programme 4 month posts during 2-year foundation programme
This programme in the foundation years (FY) is designed for trainees who wish to work in an academic subspecialty and undertake small research projects under supervision.

MSc Paediatric Science minimum 3 years after graduation
This course is designed primarily for overseas qualified doctors and health professionals who wish to develop skills in evidence-based paediatrics, audit and critical appraisal within a range of clinical paediatric subspecialties.

Clinical Research Fellowships 1- 3 years during specialist training
These CRFs are designed to develop research skills and generate pilot data (1 yr) leading to external funding for a supervised research project with enrolment in a MD (2 yr) or PhD (3 yr) programme. They must be funded from external sources, such as MRC, CSO, YCF etc.
Clinical Lectureship 3-5 years starting year 3, 4, or 5 of specialist training
These CLs are for paediatric trainees who have a higher degree (MD or PhD) and wish to consolidate and develop their research skills with a view to an academic career. They can be for up to five years and provide 20% protected time for research, and 80% for clinical training.
Clinical Scientist 2+ years during later specialist training, pre CCT
These competitive posts aim to offer trainees who are establishing themselves as clinical researchers to further develop their scientific skills in anticipation of obtaining a senior clinical lectureship (SCL) or equivalent.
Senior Clinical Lectureship Usually 5 years, post CCST
SCLs (or Senior Clinical Research Fellowships) are open to those with an MD or PhD who plan to pursue a career in academic paediatrics, devoting a large proportion of their time to research, generating external funding and producing high quality research and high impact publications.
