There is a high level of respiratory morbidity within the West of Scotland providing many opportunities for clinical and basic research in paediatric lung disease. Currently the respiratory group has research interests in four areas: surfactant function and composition particularly in severe respiratory failure; compliance with medication; organisation of care for asthmatic children and energy expenditure in lung disease.

There are excellent facilities for all aspects of paediatric lung function assessment within the Lung Function Laboratory of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children under the direction of Dr Paton. Facilities for the chemical and physical assessment of surfactant are available within the laboratories in Child Health.

The group has close working links with Human Nutrition and with the adult asthma research group under Professor Neil Thomson at Gartnavel Hospital.
