Abstract

The origin of vertex algebras can be traced back to two sources: the study of two-dimensional conformal field theory and the work of Borcherds and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman on the moonshine module of the monster group. Today vertex algebras are ubiquitous in the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. They also play an important role in algebraic geometry, finite group theory, integrable systems and combinatorics. In my talk I will define vertex algebras and discuss some fundamental examples.
